About the producer
Tegernseerhof
Martin Mittelbach is a Wachau insider with an outsider’s perspective. He is the fifth generation of Mittelbachs to run the historic Tegernseerhof, an estate that dates back over 1,000 years. Despite the historical value of the estate, you couldn’t find a more progressive winemaker in this region with his own standards and way of thinking. Martin took over the estate at a very young age and immediately changed the way things were done. As you can imagine, there was some friction with his father, who preferred to make wines that were sweeter. The grapes are harvested and rigorously sorted to remove any botrytis, and then vinified in stainless steel. His wines are like his personality: intense, focused and highly intellectual, and have little to do with the often baroque wines that are so common in the Wachau DAC. On every level, the wines of Tegernseerhof excel and can stand alongside the greatest producers in Austria.
