Along the old Roman road in the municipality of Riemst, the fabulous Genoels-Elderen castle shines. With 25 ha of vineyards, Genoels-Elderen is today one of the largest and most influential wine castles in Belgium. When the Van Rennes family moved here in 1990, there was virtually no wine growing left in the Limburg plains. The beautiful wine cellars in the castle and the rich wine history of this estate really captured the imagination of the new lord of the castle. He dreamed of restoring the Roman vineyards to their original glory. It did not take long before Jaap Van Rennes made the decision and decided to breathe new life into wine growing in Riemst. His daughter Joyce turned out to be the perfect 'partner in crime' for this. She studied oenology in the South of France and then went to Burgundy several times to refine her knowledge. With her expertise and her father's cheerful optimism and hard work, the first vines were planted in 1991. The train to top wine and international prestige had left.
