Tenuta Anfosso
Rossese di Dolceacqua, a mouthful but what a beautiful name!, is a tiny and virtually forgotten DOC in Liguria. Rossese, the indigenous grape in this appellation, can be compared at its very best to a cross between a red Côte de Nuits and an intense Côte-Rôtie; floral aromas of fresh flowers, roasted herbs and accents of smoked meat, all interspersed with an intense stony minerality and tannins that are present, … But actually not! Sounds too good to be true? No. Believe me. A stone's throw from the Golfo di Genova you will find Tenuta Anfosso, in Soldano. Alessandro Anfosso produces with his 5.5 HA, in total vin nature style, one blend and three singoli vigneti, all from ungrafted Rossese Rosso and which were planted in terraces in 1977, 1905 and 1888. In the very best vintages he also releases a Rossese Bianco from vines over 170 years old from, you guessed it, also pre-phylloxera vines. Tenuta Anfosso is a forgotten jewel of old world winemaking, as it once was, with a few remaining craftsmen making a living on this unforgiving flysh terroir, near the sea, capable of producing world class wines.
