Additional information vinification | Carefully selected overripe and botrytis-affected grapes are harvested by hand and brought to the winery in small harvest crates to avoid bruising during transport and oxidation. At the winery, the crates are emptied into pneumatic presses, which destem some of the grape bunches. After pressing, the must flows under the influence of gravity into the settling tanks. The tanks are cooled and the must is allowed to settle for one to two nights. The clean must is then tapped off and fermented in stainless steel tanks or Hungarian oak barrels. Fermentation takes place under temperature control and lasts approximately three to five weeks. After fermentation, the wine is stabilized and aged for several months in tanks or barrels (the proportion of new and used barrels varies per wine) on the fine lees. Late harvested wines are aged for four to six months, while the sweet Szamorodni wine spends at least a year in our historic cellars. Each batch is tasted regularly during maturation. The final blend is then composed and bottling takes place. The wine then matures further in the bottle before being marketed. |

Region info | The Tokaj wine region is located 220 km northeast of Budapest, at the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers. The Zemplén Mountains are volcanic and rise steeply in conical peaks from the northern edge of the Great Plain. Two rivers, the Bodrog and the Tisza, meet on the southern side of this range, where the Tokaj Hill rises above the villages of Tokaj and Tarcal. The summer winds from the plain, the shelter of the mountains and the autumn mists rising from the rivers create ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis. Tokaji was the first wine to be made deliberately from grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis). The specific conditions that cause this rot – the shriveling of the grapes and the intense concentration of their sugars, acids and aromas – make the wines of the Tokaj region unique. |
Vintage info | The harvest was the earliest in living memory and probably the earliest ever. This produced a good quantity of healthy, ripe grapes with firm acidity and excellent quality. The warm, dry autumn was more conducive to the drying of the grapes than to the development of botrytis. Despite this, they were able to pick a very satisfactory quantity of excellent quality Aszú grapes, a generous portion of which has been included in this blend. All in all, a record-breaking and exceptional vintage: ripe, rich and perfectly balanced. |
