Cantina Gungui
A Spaniard will tell you that Garnacha is Spanish. A Frenchman will tell you that Grenache is French. And a Sardinian will tell you that Cannonau is Sardinian. Whatever the case, and wherever its origins lie, it is a Mediterranean grape that performs best on sandy, granite soils in a continental climate with Mediterranean influences. And the few vineyards that Luca Gungui owns tick that box! We are here in the unofficial grand cru zone of Grenache/Cannonau in Sardinia and Italy, Mamoiada. Over 700m altitude, soils of decomposed granite, warm days and cool nights, old albarelli bushvines and a talented young winemaker... what more could you want? Luca produces an earthy, savoury rosato and a full, ripe and structured red wine. In the very best vintages he also produces a Riserva that can compete with the best Châteauneuf-du-Papes of this world. A domain to follow closely!
