For the foodies among us, the Basque Country is anything but unknown territory. But many people tend to forget that Txakoli can also hold its own in the field of vinology. Admittedly; Txakoli, which can be divided into the three subregions Arabako, Bizkaiko & Getariako, can sometimes be a bit “industrial”. So it is important to find the right producer. And that is what we do here at Crombé, for you (you are welcome!). What do you think, for example, of Rosa Maria & Iñaki Etxeberria from Bengoetxe, which means 'coming home' in Basque? Bengoetxe is a small (5 HA) family project that produces only two wines. Few, indeed. And it would not have been far from the project never getting off the ground, if it had not been for Iñaki himself, after years of struggle, who ensured that the Getariako subzone, which is located most inland with its steep plots, was allowed to become part of the Txakoli DO. And Iñaki was right; the wines of Bengoetxe, certified organic, are gems. Indigenous yeasts, slow cool fermentations, aging on the lees, no bâtonnage, natural CO2, etc. Trust us; even though the DO is under the radar, the wines are great and can easily hold their own against the best Muscadets. It is not for nothing that the wines of Bengoetxe have been a permanent fixture in the top gastronomy in Spain for years!
