Long before Lodewijk Waes started working as a winegrower in Zwijnaarde, wine was already being made in the same place by Burgundian dukes. Today, Lodewijk grows various grape varieties there, including solaris, bianca and cabernet cortis, based on age-old biodynamic principles and with a focus on manual work. In this way, he wants to make wine with respect for nature that guarantees quality year after year. The fact that he succeeds in this is clearly evident from the prizes that Wijndomein Waes has already won. For example, in several years, it has won the prize for best Belgian wine. Wijndomein Waes is located in a microclimate thanks to its proximity to the Scheldt. After all, a river can ensure that the surrounding area gets extra sun, but also rather moderate temperatures during warm summers and cold winters. In addition, the sandy soils warm up quickly, which contributes to ripening. Thanks to these soils, excess water will also drain away quickly. The ideal conditions for optimally ripe grapes!
